Arêtes was formed in 2011 by Brian Semple and James Grisbrook. Semple had grown up playing in folk and punk bands in Belfast, while Grisbrook had been making lo-fi electronica since his teenage years in South London. In 2012, Arêtes added Daryl Sweet (guitar, mandolin and banjo), Ryan Harkness (guitar) and Ray Moody (drums) to their line up.
